Bug 153572 – Volume keys not working until gnome-keybinding-properties called

After starting Gnome, the special keys for volume up/down/mute do not have any effect. However, after invoking gnome-keybinding-properties and re-assigning the same keys (XF86AudioMute, XF86AudioLowervolume, XF86AudioRaiseVolume) to the same actions (Volume mute, Volume down, Volume up) as they are already registered, they will work, until the next Gnome restart.

This is reproducible at will, and happens since I updated from Gnome 2.10 to Gnome 2.14.

Gnome 2.16 and newer don't show that problem. If they do for you, don't hesitate to reopen this bug.

I now upgraded to Gnome 2.16, and unfortunately, the issue is not fixed.

What can I do to examine the cause to more detail?

Gnome 2.18 works fine as well. multimedia keys are sent through dbus now. Major Gnome apps have been modified to work with this new interface.

I recently had a complete lockup of gnome-session after a call to the gnome theme manager and had to delete my .gconf directory. After recreating everything, my volume keys finally worked, which they didn't right after the 2.18 upgrade.
