I hadn't noticed the package and compiled up directly from www.realtek.com.tw. I had not problems until I tried the portage package. Same thing unexpected crashes. Went back to tarball from Realtek and no problems since.

It seems that the tarball from Realtek is newer than what we have in the portage

Readme from the zip file that the portage downloads:
Dec 8 2005 - created r8187_release_note.txt

This site has a newer file
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=24&PFid=1&Level=6&Conn=5&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true

Download links from the above site:

Readme from the zip file downloaded directly from Realtek
Version number is still 1.1, but release date is 2006-01-13
And it clearly mentions it supports Gentoo 3.1

You should unzip the source file and then:
./makedrv and ./wlan0up

ReadMe.txt file contains more information.
