This happend when i did a 'USE=arts emerge -DuN world'.
I am now remerging it without arts to see if the error still occurs.

NOw it seems to lock up the computer trying to remerge it without arts

I'd say it's more an issue with your compiler/toolchain than it is with this package.

right now i am in the process of emerge -e world ,...  looks like it is having trouble merging gcc
