hi: I would like to install a new gentoo by copying the root partition from my existing gentoo installation to an external hard drive, which then becomes my internal hard drive in my new computer. this part is easy---and saves me and the poor folks running the gentoo mirrors bandwidth.

alas, what is difficult is to figure out how to transfer the boot sector to the new drive. the new drive is at /dev/sdc during the transfer (while I have full access), but will be at /dev/sda once I physically move it over to the new computer.

it would be great to get some more detailed installation instructions on how to accomplish this.

sincerely,

/iaw

The place to ask for this kind of help is the Gentoo Forums:

http://forums.gentoo.org

Look in the "Installation Forum"; there is a special topic right at the start on working with Grub and the MBR.
