My use flags:
USE="xv slang readline gpm berkdb gdbm tcpd pam libwww ssl nls mitshm perl 
python gif imlib sdl oggvorbis gtk X qt kde motif opengl mozilla avi"

The error:

remerging avifile and then emerging xmms fixed this.
