Description brlund 2006-09-03 19:51:39 UTC
In both console and graphical install using GRP, an error is displayed after copying files and uncompressing portage. The install tries to set the root password at this point and it cannot. The install then quits. The error message said to include the /var/log/install.log and xml file in the report, but I can see no obvious way to attach the files to this report.
Comment 1 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-03 20:08:59 UTC
You have to attach them after the bug is created. The /tmp/compile_output.log would be pretty useful. It may just be a link at this point, which would mean you'd need to mount your / you were using for the install and pull it from the /tmp there.

compile_output.log file

The compile output log file was too big to attach so I have saved it at the following address http://h1.ripway.com/brlund/compile_output.log

The install.log and xml files were not saved before it crashed, so I couldn't include them.

I couldn't submit this without attaching a file, so I made a simple file called temp and attached it.

That URL is 404.
Comment 4 Jakub Moc (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-04 00:32:52 UTC
Attach the files here, never refer to external links, and definitely never refer to broken external links.
Comment 5 brlund 2006-09-04 08:00:59 UTC
The link I provided does work when I click on it. It is a 6.6 MB log file so I can't just attach the file.

just give us the last 100 lines or so.
Comment 7 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-04 15:03:03 UTC
Jakub, please leave our bugs alone once we've already taken them over. Thanks.

Can you attach your /tmp/installprofile.xml?
Comment 10 brlund 2006-09-04 22:02:09 UTC
No, I'm afraid I was never able to locate the file to attach it for you. I told the installer to place it in "/", but it wasn't there when I rebooted with the live dvd. I remember the installer stating that the file would be saved when the install finished. So I guess it wasn't saved before it crashed. The only one I found was the compile output log.
Comment 11 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-04 23:43:24 UTC
That would have been the LiveCD's /, not the new install. Can you try to run your install again to try to reproduce the problem? If you can't reproduce, there's nothing more to do.
Comment 12 brlund 2006-09-05 07:57:27 UTC
I actually checked in /mnt/gentoo thinking that would become "/", but it wasn't there either. So I don't know. Yesterday, I tried reinstalling the old way with the minimal cd and it worked fine.

I'll try with the live dvd again though if see if it errors out again. Hopefully since I won't be rebooting before I send it, the /tmp/installprofile.xml file will be there. I'll leave it at it's default location in /tmp.

As a side note, I found that the graphical installer deleted one of my partitions when it crashed. Reading about the graphical installer, some people said it might do this and it did.

Before it crashed I had 2 partitions on the hard drive (80 MB in USB enclosure).
/dev/sdb1 - small fat32 (2.0 GB)
/dev/sdb2 - ntfs holding windows 2000 (40 GB)
I let the installer partition the unallocated space and did the install.
After the installer errored out, the drive was left with just the small fat32 partition.

I re-installed with the liveDVD using dialog instead of graphical and ended up with exactly the same error.
Hopefully this will give you more to work with. I didn't realize it would add a seperate entry for each attachment added. Sorry for the length of the post.

This was LiveDVD (not CD)

Comment 20 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-07 05:14:19 UTC
It looks like the reason that this happens is because the AMD64 LiveDVD was built incorrectly. The CD is in /experimental, so it should be expected to be broken unless proven otherwise :P Anyway, not an installer bug.
