many use apache with ssl, mysql or php. at this time it is not possible to use
emerge to install this. it would be really nice to have ebuilds for each
combination.

umm, i dont see the bug 
 
i use mod_ssl and mod_php with my apache installation ... i used emerge to get these installed 
... as for mod_mysql, its not in portage
