the wxMaxima-0.6.5-r1 omits a line that sets up the WX_CONFIG variable, which screws the compilation.  See https://gentooscience.org/ticket/54 for more info.  The offending error text: 
wxMaxima.cpp:2424: error: 'wxID_PREFERENCES' was not declared in this scope
(and several like it)

I very well may be misusing the need-wxwidgets command here, it works on my system, but there could very well be a more robust/elegant solution.

Not in portage, use the tracker bug for this.
