This bug has been covered (along with its workaround) in this forum thread:
http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-464647.html

But to make the dev's lives easier, I'll repeat the whole thing here.

If I try to emerge the current, stable media-sound/audacity, I get the following error:

>>> Emerging (2 of 2) media-sound/audacity-1.2.1 to /
 * Audacity will not build if wxGTK was compiled
 * with unicode support. If you are using a version of
 * wxGTK <= 2.4.2, you must set USE=-gtk2. In newer versions,
 * you must set USE=-unicode.

!!! ERROR: media-sound/audacity-1.2.1 failed.
Call stack:
  ebuild.sh, line 1555:   Called dyn_setup
  ebuild.sh, line 668:   Called pkg_setup
  audacity-1.2.1.ebuild, line 42:   Called die

!!! wxGTK must be re-emerged without unicode suport
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.

...so naturally, I emerge wxGTK with USE="-unicode", and then try audacity again. No dice. No matter what I do, this error still appears.

The solution is to add the ebuild to /etc/portage/package.keywords - the 1.3 series appears to handle Unicode fine (it has a USE flag for it) and compiles without any problems.
