Did you try booting with "pci=assign-busses" added to the kernel command line as dmesg says? If that doesn't fix the issue can you see if you can reproduce it using vanilla-sources-2.6.17? I'll try that as soon as I get a minute and report back. -- Regards, Mick It would be more worthwhile testing the latest development kernel, currently 2.6.18-rc4 If the problem exists there, please attach "lspci -v" output from that kernel with pci=assign-busses Thanks Daniel, I have just booted the vanilla 2.6.18-rc4 and have saved all relevant files under the same links I've listed above. In addition, here's the log after a bootup: http://michaelkintzios.fastmail.fm/evo_n600c/log_messages.txt I still cannot see the multiport-bluetooth device, or the modem. Not sure if I need to run setserial or do any magic for these to appear (like I have to do for the IrDA). -- Regards, Mick I found this link which may help your understanding with regards to the Compaq multiport, although mine does not have a wlan chip attached to it, but bluetooth. http://joshua.raleigh.nc.us/cpq_wireless.html HTH. -- Regards, Mick Final thought: There is of course a possibility that there is nothing wrong with the kernel, but that the hardware is for some reason damaged, but isn't it too much of a coincidence that neither the bluetooth chip, nor the modem are detected? What could have damaged both at the same time? The laptop has no signs of a drop or knock on its casing . . . -- Regards, Mick Latest findings:
Using the vanilla kernel does not get me any nearer to detecting the illusive hardware. However, I just booted a Knoppix CD with the 2.6.17 kernel and the modem is now detected!

Still no idea why my Gentoo OS will not see it, or what I need to do to make it visible to the kernel. I had no success with Knoppix and the multiport/bluetooth chip.

Could it be that you have forgotten to enable PCI express support or something like that? Yes, I had left pci express out (thinking that this is a relatively old 1997-8 vintage laptop). Now that I've included it I can see the ltmodem, load the module and dial out - wey, hey! I must apologise at least for raising half of this bug report because the transparent bridge error is gone. However, I am still getting nowhere with the bluetooth chip. Any pointers please? -- Regards, Mick Well, can you explain what you have tried? I think there is a Gentoo bluetooth guide as well - have you read that? I have never used bluetooth so don't really know where to start giving advice. If you're still stuck on bluetooth and have exhausted the usual support mediums then it would probably be best if you open a new bug for that.
