Couple questions -- 1) which mesa version? 2) can you downgrade your mga, xorg-server and other x11-drivers/ to the older versions and try that? Since todays emerge -uDp world (and downgrade of cairo...) and restart of the computer glxinfo worked _exactly once_:

glxinfo works after restart of X till trying to start glxgears. Let's track this upstream to see what happens. Re-opening.
