Bug 141081 – openldap (slapd) init script fails to start (start-stop-daemon doesn't work)

openldap 2.3.24-r1 won't start via the init script.  

Here's an example:
r52 ~ # /etc/init.d/slapd start
 * Starting ldap-server ...                                                                         [ ok ]
r52 ~ # ps aux |grep slap
root      9345  0.0  0.0   1480   484 pts/21   S+   15:23   0:00 grep slap

So even though the init script says it started there is no process for slapd

When I manually run what the init script does (sans the start-stop-daemon it works)....

Look at your syslog to see why it didn't start. Post that info here.

Check the permissions of BDB files in /var/lib/openldap-data/

These should be owned by ldap.ldap. When using slapadd files will be created under  user root. 

In my case there were no errors logged in syslog.
