Description Dimitry Bradt (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-14 01:09:51 UTC
hello,

I was wondering of someone could (help writing / write) an update to the nvidia-guide. This is needed (imho) due we can't use the nvidia-glx on the newest xorg.

that's what ~x86 users should get when they try to follow the guide (and emerge nvidia-glx)

[blocks B     ] >=x11-base/xorg-server-1.0.99 (is blocking media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8762)
[ebuild  N    ] media-video/nvidia-glx-1.0.8762  USE="dlloader" 0 kB

greetings
diox

This is a temporary problem, well as temporary as nvidia wants to.
You gave away your freedom to nvidia, file a bug with them and ask it back

augustus: you're the maintainer i suppose... could you elaborate about for how long do those drivers are supposed to last in the tree, what exactly they are, to which xorg versions they apply, are they a replacement for nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel or just a tmeporary solution like neysx wrote?
Comment 3 Kris Kersey (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-07-18 08:31:39 UTC
Right now, nvidia drivers do not support xorg 7.1 because of new extensions in xorg. So, for now, all nvidia users need to mask xorg 7.1. Although you can use the drivers with 7.1 it is not recommended because of the problems that can occur.

I am working on getting my new x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers and x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers marked stable. This should happen in about a week. As soon as that happens, I will work on rewritting the NVIDIA guide to reflect the new ebuilds and the current state of xorg.

Last friday "nvidia-drivers" is found stable on all arches. I emerge'd it and it just worked. Shall i make an update to the guide ?

This is my updates to the guide. I'm not sure if I have commit access or not to anything under doc, so I'm posting this here, rather than stepping on any toes. This mentions both the older drivers and the newer ones, since the newer ones are in the tree.

The current ~arch nvidia-{,legacy-}drivers and the current ~arch xorg-x11 (7.1) work fine together. The guide will need to be updated as both go stable, but if they're done at the same time, then it should be seamless for everybody (which is always the best way to do it, anyway.)

Fixed in CVS; went with wolf31o2's patch plus the /usr/share/doc/ location revision from diox, plus a few things I added. Thanks very much, guys. :)
