for the case this may may help, but mostly because emerge told me to do so, i've attached config.log.

when upgrading to to totem-1.4.2 [1.2.1-r1] USE="dbus% dvd gnome mad mpeg nsplugin ogg vorbis xv -a52 -debug -flac -lirc -nvtv% -theora -xine" i got: ... ... configure: error: Cannot find required GStreamer-0.10 plugin 'goom'. It should be part of gst-plugins-good. Please install it. ... ... emerging gst-plugins-good-0.10.3 manually before emerging totem solved this issue for me.
