Description Ricardo 2006-07-11 12:33:01 UTC
If I open firefox-1.5.0.4 and navigate to a website like http://www.bbcworld.com, the browser will spontaneously close. This seems to happen on other websites that post pictures or some kind of animation, I'm not sure which. For everyone's conveninece, my emerge --info and the result of both running firefox through strace and firefox --sync are included as separate attachments below.

do u have composite enabled in xorg? I disabled and it seemed to fix this
Comment 5 Ricardo 2006-07-13 19:02:05 UTC
Yes, disabling the composite manager in xorg fixes this problem for me.

However, I consider that an unsatisfactory fix. I hope someone more knowledgeable can figure out why the composite manager is causing firefox to crash.

I seem to have this same problem. A segfault right after mmap2 on some sites. Additionally, firefox seems to crash just about any time I try to "save image as"

However, I do *not* have the composite extension turned on.

..and somewhat ironically, firefox crashes when I try to follow that gentoo-wiki link right above...
Comment 9 Stuart Longland (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-09-25 06:41:11 UTC
BBC World is working fine here. It's worth noting that I don't use the Composite extension.

The Gentoo Wiki page mentioned, suggests an issue with Macromedia's Flash plugin and Composite.

Since Flash is a proprietry closed-source plugin, there's nothing we can really do about it... other than to bash on Adobe's door on your behalf.

Given that they've also ignored the scores of AMD64 users out there, I don't like our chances.

The content from the wiki page (for those having difficulties viewing it).

Mozilla (Firefox) crash Issue with Flash

If Mozilla/Firefox crashes whenever you visit some sites with Flash objects and you've enabled the Composite module in xorg.conf, you may use the following as a workaround:

export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

You can either add this line to the startup script for Mozilla/Firefox (/usr/bin/firefox), or export it globally by placing it in a new or existing file in /etc/env.d/
File: /usr/bin/firefox

export MOZILLA_LAUNCHER=firefox-bin
export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1
exec /usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher

File: /etc/env.d/09flashfix

XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1

Be sure to do an env-update and log out and back in if you choose the /etc/env.d/ route.
