Do you have pilot-link-0.12 installed? libmal will not be able to link to that. You will need to purge your system of that version and use the one that is in portage. If you believe you do not have 0.12, then attach /var/tmp/portage/libmal*/work/libmal*/config.log to this bug

Compiling against pilot-link 0.12 can be fixed by newer version 0.44 at http://jasonday.home.att.net/code/libmal/libmal.html .

Hi,
This an ebuild for libmal 0.44, which you will need if you are 
using pilot-link 0.12 rather than pilot-link 0.11

http://www.pilot-link.org/ for some more. Note that the original home of malsync http://tomw.net/malysnc seems to have gone away.
