I ran a --newuse after removing -nls amongst others and gnome-panel-1.4.2-r2 failed to build, even after completely unmerging it. It dies with the following messages:

gnome 1.x is deprecated and no longer maintained upstream.  Please look at migrating to 2.x.  Dropping severity and priority.
