I know mail-client/balsa-2.3.12 is not in portage yet but mail-client/balsa-2.3.8 no longer compiles on ~x86 anyway. See bug 137922
Balsa 2.3.12 works with  x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.18

Hmm ... strange classification. 
Bug 137922 needs mail-client/balsa version bumped to compile at all.
If Bug 137922 will get x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.19 fixed too, then no issue.

Further info on x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.19. 

x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.19 also breaks the kernels make xconfig with the nvidia binary driver. Total lock up, reproducable every time.

With the nv Xorg 7.0 driver, make xconfig only kills Xorg with a more graceful Floating Point Exception, reproducable every time.

x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.19 remains broken in its own right. Reverting to 
x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.18 restores normality.
