Bug 137142 – After emerge -uDa world, at boot Set Hardware Clock [UTC] hangs. OpenPower 720

Hi,

I cannot boot anymore our server (IBM Open Power 720). I did an emerge -uDa world.  Lots of files needed to be updated. Then I tried to reboot. It turns out that when it tries to set the hardware clock the system hangs :(

If I press Ctrl+C it resumes, but since clock is in the CRITICAL_SERVICES (at /sbin/rc) it cannot do much. 

I have seen the same behavior and previously. The workaround was to remove "clock" for CRITICAL_SERVICES at /sbin/rc. Then, at boot time it was failing to set the hardware clock, but the boot was completed, and the system worked fine.

Now, after the new emerge -uDa world, it fails to set the clock, i remove the clock from the CRITICAL_SERVICES, but now it tries again to set it when it enters runlevel 3 :(((

Ctrl+C does not work, and the boot freezes.

Any help is more than welcome.

I recompiled the kernel with Enhanced RTC support and enable the /dev/rtc
