Segfaults are often due to bad memory or heat. The version of portage in the 2006.0 stage tarballs tends to sit at 51% for quite a long time, so the fact that it happens there every time, doesn't really mean much. Anyway, even if 'emerge --metadata' doesn't complete, you can still continue. Portage will create the metadata as it needs it. After completing installing I have the same problen when making emerge --sync Is there a way to test the memory, in order to discard a problem with it? I have tested the memory with memtest86 (http://www.memtest.org). This program reports no problem with memory Solved. The memory was bad. After changing it I could install gentoo. (Just problems with DMA for SATA and sound with my nforce4 chipset. I hope I can find a solution for that). |
