The following group of packages will Upgrade on one emerge and immediatly Downgrade on the next.  The cycle repeats over and over.

So p.mask the lower version and find what depends on it and causes the downgrade...

As best I can tell, there is no effect from adding the packages to the p.mask.

Yeah, that's why I wanted you to p.mask the _lower_ version that it wants to downgrade to, not the other one.

I removed the game and it solved the problem.
