With:
app-emulation/bochs-2.2.6 [2.2.5] USE="X% debugger ncurses% readline sdl wxwindows -vnc%"

bochs fails to build with the following error message:
[...]
checking for x86 debugger support... yes
checking IOKit/storage/IOCDMedia.h usability... no
checking IOKit/storage/IOCDMedia.h presence... no
checking for IOKit/storage/IOCDMedia.h... no
checking for CDROM support... yes
checking for Sound Blaster 16 support... linux
checking for standard PC gameport support... yes
checking for gdb stub enable... yes
configure: error: --enable-debugger and --enable-gdb-stub are mutually exclusive

!!! ERROR: app-emulation/bochs-2.2.6 failed.
Call stack:
  ebuild.sh, line 1539: Called dyn_compile
  ebuild.sh, line 939: Called src_compile
  bochs-2.2.6.ebuild, line 96: Called die

The configure error msg says it all. Perhaps the approach proposed in bug #121426 is something worth trying here?

You are right, I hope that this way everybody is happy with bochs.
