when xdm (gdm) starts I just see slight stripes on my lcd and the system hangs. after reboot I went to interactive boot and looked at Xorg.0.log - no error there. I've already applied the patch from bug #135759 to the ebuild. This isn't the problem here. ldd also shown no problem with the driver.

some more details:
* the system stll works somewhat. that is the hd-led blinks and ctrl-alt-del causes the system to shut down.
* x really hangs. ctrl-alt-backspace does not work

Try disabling anything GLX or DRI related in your xorg.conf and see if that helps. I've noticed that X.Org 7.1 and the latest SiS driver seem to have problems with the Mesa 6.5, or maybe Mesa is the culprit. Either way, I have had to disable software OpenGL rendering (DRI is not supported on my SiS 741CX) since it will cause X to crash. Everything was working fine with X.Org 7.0.

dunno what happened but appling the 'assert' patch seemed to not became effective. I've started the X system via startx >xorg.log 2>&1 and after rebooting checked it. The log showed that the symbol was still missing. After rebuilding the driver again it now works.

I have filed a bug against xorg. It should not lock up in this case.
