After an upgrade to kde-3.5.2 (split ebuilds, only running kmail, knode, kdeprint and a few more), kmail throws "could not find mime type application/octet-stream" when being started.

You probably has a broken sycoca running, make sure your path variable is correct.

You were right! That happens when you don't have to restart KDE to get the latest version of some nice apps ;-) Thanks a lot! I'm sorry for having caused unnecessary work.
