I can't reproduce with both fontconfig 2.2.3 and 2.3.2-r1. What fontconfig version are you using?

I apologize. I was still using fontconfig 2.3.93 from my overlay which I had meant to mask but obviously forgot to. 

Using 2.3.2-r1 there's indeed no sandbox violation.
