on x86:

[ebuild  N    ] net-im/kmess-1.4.2  -arts -debug -xinerama

Compiles with no problems. Further everything seems to work fine (logging in, chatting etc. etc.)

I am unable to connect through a http proxy, gaim is able to connect just fine using the same proxy.  Can someone else who has access to a proxy, please test and see if it is just me.
