These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

but an 
$> emerge --newuse --update --ask --verbose --deep --tree world
shows nothing to emerge.

Because your poppler-bindings don't match poppler version... Upgrade it and you won't get any downgrade.

Remove --newuse from there...

Thanks, but why wasn't app-text/poppler-bindings upgraded by portage - b/c I used the "--deep" switch ?

Well, honestly - not enough info to tell you; I don't assume that poppler is in /var/lib/portage/world, is it? You might try emaint --check to see if there are any issues w/ your world file.
