Bug 132440 – mplayer-1.0.20060415 can't find "default.sub", affecting mplayerplug-in

Symptoms: After updating Mplayer to version 1.0.20060415, every time a non-subtitled video is opened, the error message: "Failed to open /home/<user>/.mplayer/default.sub" is displayed. It also appears that mplayerplug-in does not handle this error well, causing any playback using mplayerplug-in to fail. Upon pressing play, the window merely flickers, and then returns to the grey background. It should be noted that mplayerplug-in does NOT display this error anywhere, causing troubleshooting to be non-obvious.

Reproducible: Always. I have both an amd64 and an x86 version of Gentoo installed on the same machine, and this bug affects both versions identically.

Workaround: Creating an empty "default.sub"-file in the required directory, for instance with the command:
touch ~/.mplayer/default.sub
