Description Barry Shilliday 2006-05-02 16:20:53 UTC
A separate issue found while investigating bug #132056:

On rebooting 2.6.16-r6 I've received some kernel panics. I cannot copy
and paste the information but have recorded this:

Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000428
EIP is at sky2_poll+0x1da/0x870 [sky2]

Call Trace: [truncated]
ktime_get
net_rx_action
__do_softirq
do_IRQ
common_interrupt
default_idle
cpu_idle
start_kernel
unknown_bootoption

Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt.

The problem exists in conjunction with extremely poor performance from the sky2 driver and doesn't occur at all on the 2.6.15 kernels which use an earlier version of the driver.

Does this happen on every reboot?

Can you reproduce this on the latest development kernel? Currently 2.6.17-rc3 -- it has the same sky2 version, but sky2 may be depending on some new network-layer behaviour.

If it happens on 2.6.17-rc3, please note down the EIP line again.

It doesn't happen on every reboot. I have however had the same panic with the newer 1.3rc1 sky2 driver. I will try the vanilla 2.6.17-rc3 sources and report back.

Should be fixed as of gentoo-sources-2.6.16-r8, please reopen if this happens again.
