if end system is using ALSA, the firefox launcher/links need to be modified to use aoss as specified in the following URL:  http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_ALSA_sound_mixer_aka_dmix#Firefox.2C_Mozilla.2C_RealPlayer.2C_Skype_.26_Co
Maybe this bug should be filed under mozilla-launcher?
This also means that the 'alsa-oss' ebuild would become a dependency if alsa is enabled for the mozilla-firefox ebuild.

You could leave the end user to modify the script, but then the user would have to do so *every* time firefox releases a new update, and I dont think that is practical.
