Description Sven Vermeulen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-05-01 10:32:15 UTC
The pcmcia-cs tool is obsoleted from a certain Linux kernel version (can't remember which one) and should be substituted with the pcmciautils tool.

IIRC, it *will be* deprecated, but it hasn't yet. Its removal has been apparent for some time now, but hasn't happened yet...or do you know which specific kernel version it's removed from, and for which arch?
Comment 2 Henrik Brix Andersen 2006-05-28 05:13:33 UTC
pcmcia-cs is not deprecated yet, however it will soon be.

I'm working on a pcmcia-cs-to-pcmciautils migration HOWTO.
Comment 3 Daniel Webert 2006-06-12 12:02:28 UTC
http://pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net/ says:
IMPORTANT: The Linux pcmcia-cs package is officially deprecated.

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/utils/kernel/pcmcia/pcmcia.html says:
Please note that the kernel support for this new feature is only present since 2.6.13-rc1.

* only x86 has a stable kernel-2.4
* there are no <2.6.15 stable vanilla-sources/gentoo-sources

maybe changing the virtual/pcmcia rdepend-order pcmciautils first would help ...

Yes, it's deprecated upstream - but not yet in Gentoo. It will be as soon as my HOWTO is done.
Comment 5 Steev Klimaszewski (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-08-17 04:54:38 UTC
Brix sent me the howto, however I haven't yet finished it, if someone wants to take a stab, shoot me an email and I will send it your way
Comment 6 Nik Raub 2006-09-11 00:02:33 UTC
I am probably not competent enough to finish this howto. Nonetheless it would be nice if it were available here or on the wiki so that people can take a look at the work in progress. Also makes it more likely that someone contributes.

Okay, here's brix's unfinished draft of his pcmcia-cs to pcmciautils guide. Note the unfinished FIXME sections.

I've been doing a little bit for this on the side, but I thought I'd upload the original so that others can help.
Comment 8 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-11-19 11:20:17 UTC
I'll take this one. I've been slowly adding to the draft here; will have a revised version soon. I'll have to follow it anyway; my laptop needs to move from pcmcia-cs to pcmciautils, so this should be a learning experience.

I am having some major problems getting pcmcia and wireless to work. I have followed the attached guide with no success either. My post on the gentoo forums is here http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-3899174.html#3899174. I see that there is no documentation for pcmcia wireless and would like to help. However I have no idea how to get any of this to work. I have outlined what I have done in a list format in my forums post that could hopefully be transformed in to a how to.
Comment 10 nm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2007-11-25 04:51:00 UTC
Marking as CANTFIX, in lieu of a RESO SOMUCHFORTHAT option.

1) We don't ship pcmcia-cs with any of our install media
2) All references to pcmcia-cs have long since been replaced with pcmciautils
3) The guide's author isn't available to finish it
4) No real critical feedback on this bug

I don't see the need for such a guide anymore; seems to be a non-issue. Closing.
