While emerging hplip with the following flags:

When changing CHOST, better be really sure that you know what are you doing... You need to run 'emerge -e system' at least.

Weird - this is a newly built box and I dont think I changed CHOST. This is on a P-II box BTW

Just to add: this was a stage 3 install so CHOST is set to i686 and has not been changed.

Try rebuilding python, seems to be an old bug coming up again.

Please try Diego's suggestion. Reopen if still an issue.
