Rhythmbox 0.9.4 is indeed a great step in the right direction (my ipod works and m4a files works) - For now you can install it with a small hack

 mkdir -p /usr/local/portage/media-sound
 cp -a /usr/portage/media-sound/rhythmbox/rhythmbox-0.9.3.1_p1.ebuild !$
 cd !$
 mv rhythmbox-0.9.3.1_p1.ebuild rhythmbox-0.9.4.ebuild
 ebuild rhythmbox-0.9.4.ebuild digest
 USE="gstreamer010" emerge -k rhythmbox-0.9.4.ebuild

make sure to have your overlay pointing at /usr/local/portage/.

Well, I'm having the following problem after doing that:

** Message: don't know how to handle application/x-id3

(rhythmbox does not play any song)
