Description M. Edward Borasky 2006-04-14 16:58:38 UTC
Steps to recreate:

1. Install VMWare Workstation 5.5 on a Windows host
2. Build a Gentoo guest with xorg-x11-7.0-r1
3. Attempt to install VMWare tools:

The "config" step builds "vmhgfs" just fine, but croaks trying to do the X part with the message

Detected X.org version 7.0.

Problem extracting verion of X.org

Execution aborted

I rather doubt this is a Gentoo problem -- I'll simply drop back to xorg 6 something and it should go away. But I didn't see anything in the VMWare documentation saying that Workstation 5.5 couldn't handle xorg 7.0.

So you mean that it isn't compatible as a *guest* not that vmware-workstation doesn't work on Gentoo...

Well, it sounds more like an issue with the VMware tools, which means it needs to be taken up with VMware themselves.
