Description Stefan de Konink 2006-04-13 23:25:06 UTC
I have no clue if this report is any useful. But lets start. I'm trying to install Gentoo on a iBook 12" G4. I'm using the Universal LiveCD PPC, which is running 2.6.15. As XFS user, I made some nice partitions and started with stage1.

The first step after syncing resulted in a hanging system. (Forced to reboot manually). After three attempts I couldn't recover the XFS partition anymore, and it just 'crashed' the kernel.

What I don't know ofcourse:
1) Are some XFS problems fixed after 2.6.15?
2) Known unstability of XFS on this platform? (I noticed the PPC64 bugs)

EXT3 is still installing, no problems after sync, and even managed to survive the hardware suspention when the battery is flat.

We haven't had any reports of XFS failing on PPC, one of the devs uses it for his root fs, but perhaps it's an issue with the xfs creation tools. The only issue I'm aware of is yaboot trying to load a kernel from an XFS FS with holes, which doesn't work.

Does anyone else have any experience with XFS either way or a reproducable way to trigger this?

Closing with NEEDINFO I guess. If anyone can reproduce it, please let us know, especially if it's with a newer (2.6.16 or higher) kernel.

There was an XFS bug that trashed filesystems, it should be fixed in the latest 2.6.17 releases and newer.
