Description Nick Rout 2006-03-29 16:50:47 UTC
when installing to scsi emulated disk in vmware the devices sda, sda1,2,3 etc were detected by the installer livecd, but on reboot after successful looking install, the kernel complained that it could not find the root device /dev/sda3. Dropping at that point to the ash shell there certainly wasn't a device /dev/sda* and dmesg showed no sign of any scsi detection.

I resolved it this time by creating an ide emulated drive, booting the livecd, dd'ing the contents of /dev/sda to /dev/hda and then fixing fstab and making sure grub was installed on /dev/hda. Then deleted the scsi drive from the virtual machine in vmware's setup and it worked fine.
