Bug 12751 – plugger/mplayer full-screen instead of in browser

When plugger launches mplayer, it sets the file to loop repeatedly in
full-screen mode, rather than sucking the window into mozilla/galeon.

You can quit mplayer by hitting the default quit key 'q', but plugger causes
mplayer to respawn full-screen again.  On a faster system this make it near
impossible to navigate away from the video page because mplayer respawns very
quickly.  Other option is to kill entire browser, but lose navigation history,
very annoying, I am disabling plugger until resolved.

I found a posting in the forums that suggests a possible fix:

For most streams plugger uses mplayer as application to play movies. So simply
modify /etc/mplayer.conf and look for the line saying "fs=yes ...." and change
it to "fs=no". Be sure to check, if you have a local config file in your home
directory called .mplayer/config and edit the line with "fs=..." too. This file
overrides the systemwide settings! In case other applications than mplayer are
concerned from this problem, read the corresponding man pages and check the
parameters with the ones written down in /etc/pluggerrc because plugger hands
over a lot of options and parameters to the different applications.

I think it would be better to have mplayer not full-screen due to the problems
with looping files being unquitable without killing mplayer, so maybe this is
the easy fix?

I can confirm this bug. In addition, if I try to play a wav file it launches xmms with an open dialog. So far, every MM format I tried on plugger's samples page either failed completely or DoSd me.

plugger is worse than useless in this configuration (mozilla 1.2.1-r5). Either a warning that more configuration is required should be printed at the end of the merge (not a real solution), or this ebuild should be masked until it can do something about configuring helper applications correctly.

Found this a few days ago while browsing for mozilla bugs:

It's mozplugger, the mozilla equivalent of netscape-plugger, tuned specifically for mozilla's quirks, I've found that it works great and streams files correctly.

While it doesn't fix netscape-plugger, it obsoletes it, should we close this bug?

I use neither, but if it fixes it, why not.  Anybody feel free to take this
off my hand .. I am swamped after extended 'vacation' =)

This problem relates to the fact that by default, Gentoo places mplayer.conf in /etc, with fullscreen mode defaulting to "yes", which I've never found logical. If mplayer.conf left this default to "no" and allowed the user to fullscreen, this issue would go away.
