I changed the bug title since it is not only root-tail, but multiple programs like gv, xscreensaver... that have problem with colors missing and thus appear only black and white OK, so I solved this. The rgb.txt file was missing. Just copying it from another machine and restarting X, solve the problem. Still, there is bug somewhere so it was deleted in the first place It seems like rgb.txt got moved from /usr/lib/X11/rgb.txt to /usr/share/X11/rgb.txt in modular-X, and root-tail needs to be updated to point to the new path. See 129746 -No maintainer -"dead" upstream - no release since 2004 -apparently missed the modular X milestone. -Even after copying rgb.txt to the 'old' location in comment #3 still get the following: "Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion (ISO8859-1) unable to create fontset for font '12x24', exiting." -http://cvs.schmorp.de/root-tail/ - root-tail's CVS module == dead! Please vote, +1 here (naturally) (Removing retired dev from CC field) Pending removal: 12 Nov 2008 I vote against :) I just emerged the package on a random desktop and it works fine. Running: $> root-tail -f -g 438x90+842+0 --interval 0.5 -fn -*-fixed-medium-r-normal-*-10-*-*-*-*-*-fontset-10 /etc/gentoo-release,yellow1 works fine for me. emerge --info shows: Portage 2.1.4.4 (default-linux/x86/2007.0/desktop, gcc-4.1.2, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.26-rc4 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.26-rc4 i686 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6300 @ 1.86GHz Timestamp of tree: Sat, 20 Sep 2008 20:04:01 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p33 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.6 dev-lang/python: 2.4.4-r14, 2.5.2-r7 dev-python/pycrypto: 2.0.1-r6 sys-apps/baselayout: 1.12.11.1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.61-r2 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r3 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.23-r3 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/ca-certificates.conf /etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/php/apache2-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cgi-php5/ext-active/ /etc/php/cli-php5/ext-active/ /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="distlocks fixpackages metadata-transfer sandbox sfperms strict unmerge-orphans userfetch" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/gentoo" LINGUAS="en_US en_GB nl" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="a52 acl acpi alsa bash-completion berkdb bzip2 cairo cdr cli cracklib crypt cups dbus dri dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode esd evo fam firefox fortran gdbm gif gstreamer gtk hal iconv isdnlog jpeg mad midi mikmod mmx mp3 mpeg mudflap ncurses nptl nptlonly nvidia ogg opengl openmp pam pcre pdf perl png pppd python qt3 qt3support qt4 quicktime readline reflection sdl session spell spl sse sse2 ssl svg tcpd tiff truetype unicode vorbis win32codecs x86 xinerama xml xorg xprint xv xvid zlib" ALSA_CARDS="ali5451 als4000 atiixp atiixp-modem bt87x ca0106 cmipci emu10k1 emu10k1x ens1370 ens1371 es1938 es1968 fm801 hda-intel intel8x0 intel8x0m maestro3 trident usb-audio via82xx via82xx-modem ymfpci" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="adpcm alaw asym copy dmix dshare dsnoop empty extplug file hooks iec958 ioplug ladspa lfloat linear meter mmap_emul mulaw multi null plug rate route share shm softvol" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse joystick" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="bayrad cfontz cfontz633 glk hd44780 lb216 lcdm001 mtxorb ncurses text" LINGUAS="en_US en_GB nl" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="mga nvidia vesa vga i810" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, MAKEOPTS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY I vote to keep the package. root-tail works fine for me and has never shown any odd behavior as long as I can remember using it. huh, 2 reports of it working...I guess I will try again to see why it didn't work for me. has been working fine for years. in xfce i use root-tail -g 1100x700+55+5 --wordwrap -id `xprop -root XFCE_DESKTOP_WINDOW | cut -d' ' -f5` --justify /var/log/critical/current,yellow /var/log/acpid,green,'ACPI' /var/log/emerge.log,blue,'EMERGE' /var/log/everything/current,red,'MESSAGES' & in fluxbox it works without the -id option and since i dont know any real alternative, i'd rather keep that packet in the tree. I finally got this app working. Cool app too. http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20050124-newsletter.xml <- how I got it to work for me. Since I didn't do anything special to make this work...I am going to unmask it without any modifications to the ebuild. thanks for input all! |
