When setting the domainname in /etc/conf.d/domainname it's also advisable to set /etc/hosts. I discovered however that's the order you use in /etc/hosts is very important. Following example:

212.79.249.42 host host.bla.nl

Will not yield in a correct return of the command dnsdomainname or hostname --fqdn

212.79.249.42 host.bla.nl host

will yield in a correct dnsdomainname

Would be nice if someone can confirm this so I know it's not just me :)

The order is important (man hosts) and the examples in the handbook show the canonical form before the alias.

As mentioned on bug #122911, something like
127.0.0.1 mybox.at.myplace mybox localhost
is good enough for most people.

Already drafted in http://gentoo.neysx.org/mystuff/gentoo-x86-quickinstall.xml
and unless anyone whines about it, the handbook could use the same example.
