The blas-atlas and lapack-atlas ebuilds currently demand g77, but it should be possible to build these packages with gcc-4.x. I found a note concerning gcc-4.0 on the following webpage http://math-atlas.sourceforge.net/errata.html#gcc4. This note may be pessimistic about performance, but it is clear that atlas can be compiled with gcc-4 after one simple code modification.
