i had a working 2.12 mixer applet, i use alsa and esd.
after the configure of gnome-applets-2.14.0 there was a summary of the configure, and mixer applet was selected as 'no', the rest was yes or allways.
i emerged it with use flags: +acpi +apm -debug +gstreamer +hal -ipv6

i got gstreamer installed:
media-libs/gstreamer-0.10.0
media-libs/gstreamer-0.8.11

i upgraded to media-libs/gstreamer-0.10.4 and now gnome-base/gnome-applets-2.14.0 builds the mixer applet.
so if it'd depend on it this should be closed.

Thanks, gst-0.10 support in gnome-applets actually requires 0.10.2. Fixed the ebuild.
