Description Thomas Kohler 2006-03-17 14:38:11 UTC
After failing of gentoo-installation using initio-scsi-card (see another bug) I installed the main components on a IDE-HDD (remove scsi-card). I build the kernel with initio as module. After replug the scsi-card I want to load "modprobe initio". The answer was a kernel panic. The last lines: "not syncing: Attempted to kill init!". Other lines show the words "acpi" or "apic" I don't remember.

Looks like a bios problem after I tried a AHA-2940UW for testing and the system hangs BEFORE booting grub (after scsi-bios was initialized). But I choose a old kernel for x86 2.6.12 with initio inside. And its work also with initio-card. Last problem now is: the scsi-bootsector was not found. My workaround for this: choose a small IDE-HDD with /boot inside and from this point I can start the kernel. But at the moment no way with 2.6.15-r7 start the initio.

My System:
MSI-7207 K8NGM2-FID.
Athlon 64 Venice 3200+.
2x 256MB Dual-Ram
BIOS-Update V3.20

Please upgrade to gentoo-sources-2.6.16 and reproduce the panic. We need more details too - is the panic logged? If not, is it possible for you to hook up a serial console, or use a digital camera to capture the crash message?

I have had a similar problem using the module initio. I have an Initio 360P on AMD64, gentoo 2006.1. I am using gentoo-sources 2.6.19-r5. Attached is dmesg, contains at least some of the output of the kernel. I can provide other log files if necessary.

Created attachment 116118 [details]
output of dmesg

Contains the output of the kernel panic after loading the module initio. Done on AMD64 with kernel gentoo-sources 2.6.19-r5
