When I upgraded to MySQL 5.0.19, it installed nothing but deleted the previous version of MySQL.

FWIW, following the unslotting guide worked for me on two boxes, x86 & amd64.

Strange, it worked for me also, however another code cleanup has been committed the past night, try it again and have a look at unslotting guide [1], maybe there is still some trash from previous installs.

slotted MySQL will be available soon as an overlay, but I suggest it only if having multiple mysql installations is usefull.
