Bug 126511 – kernels 2.6.13 no longer available

Hi,

I would like to build a 2.6.13 kernel for use with the MPPE-MPPC patch available from: http://mppe-mppc.alphacron.de/

However, I have noticed that all 2.6.13 kernels have been removed from portage in the hardened-sources, gentoo-sources sections. They used to be there until recently as I have built systems with the hardened 2.6.13 sources in the past.

Is there a reason for removing this kernel from portage so soon?

If you want to use your own kernel patchsets, then grab the ebuilds from webcvs. We don't need 2.6.13 any more.

I don't want a custom patch set. I want a 2.6.13 kernel!

I thought the whole idea behind Gentoo was to give the end user the choice?

Where does "We don't need 2.6.13 any more" fit into the end user having the choice?

We won't support kernels with security bugs and won't be backporting fixes to an obsolete kernel... If you want to try some third party patches, then do it yourself, you can grab the ebuild if you need it or you don't need any ebuild at all for this, in fact...  Gentoo is also about developers' choice to not support obsolete stuff.

ok, I hadn't seen a GLSA reporting that. what was its number?

We don't release GLSAs for every single security patch that gets into kernel. You can read upstream changelogs to see how many such patches gets into kernel in every release.
