Are you using modular X or monolithic? i try the new modular X (http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg) From the wiki entry: "add virtual/x11-6.8 to your /etc/portage/profile/package.provided" never, ever do that if you want modular X apps to find their dependencies properly Please see the warning now at http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Modular_Xorg#.27emerge_-u_world.27_wants_to_install_xorg-x11_6.x_or_virtual.2Fx11 > From the wiki entry:
