It could be your CFLAGS, -Os has been known to cause issues in the past but seems much better in most instances now. Aslo -ftracer -fweb -frename-registers are all less tested. Have you tried recompiling it with -O2 -pipe? It could also be one of the libs too though, I have seen several mathematically oriented packages break with -Os and another seemingly random flag. I tried changing my CFLAGS to "-02 -pipe" and i still get the same error. It might be linked to glibc or something similar. But i'm not sure, i haven't noticed any else wrong. Any other ideas? try starting che client inside a gdb instance... maybe it will return more information $ gdb <executable> (gdb) start (gdb) continue (remember USE="debug" and FEATURE="nostrip" when compiling... ) I have not been able to reproduce your issue. I have added a new version of boinc to the tree which may solve your issue. CFLAGS also affect everything boinc links to so changing them back just for boinc is not always enough, but I don't know why your particular build of boinc is failing for you. I had the same kind of problem with boinc 5.2.14. Emerging the new 5.5.6 solved the problem for me, thanks!
