I believe in startup script of smartd (smartmontools-5.33) we should have:
start-stop-daemon --stop --pidfile /var/run/smartd.pid
instead of
start-stop-daemon --stop --pid /var/run/smartd.pid

I've comitted a new init script that works for all baselayout versions in -r1
