Chapter 10 gives a detailed overview of the possible framebuffer configuration. However the sample configuration files in chapter 10b do not mention framebuffer again.

My suggestion is to add another configuration option, for booting a kernel with framebuffer support, e.g.:

# For kernels with frame buffer support
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.12-gentoo-r10 root=/dev/hda3 video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap oder video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap,1024x768-32@85
