Lmctl misses support for higher cpi resolution than 800.
The patch at the URI adds support for these resolutions with MX518.
Works for me with the ebuild at:
https://www.toe.ch/viewcvs/public/gentoo/overlay/sys-apps/lmctl/lmctl-0.3.2-r4.ebuild?rev=10&view=markup

However, probably a better solution than adding this patch is to remove
lmctl from portage and add locomo instead. Also see bug 117622.
