after doing emerge rsync, and trying to bootstrap, binutils would not compile,
after some assistance and searching I discovered that the make.conf I had
configured for sparc64 was overwritten with an x86 make.conf.

relevant info:
following the instructions for sparc installs from gentoo.org
booting with 1.1a cdrom image
stage1-sparc64-1.4_rc1.tbz
